How to Keep a Diet Journal

Keeping a diet journal can be helpful whether you’re trying to lose weight or figure out whether or not you have a food allergy. Learn how to keep a diet journal in a way that helps you.

Nutritional experts often recommend keeping a food journal to help lose weight. Writing down what you eat helps make you aware of the reality of what you’re eating and also helps to identify eating patterns. Once it down in writing, it is not unusual to see things your were unaware of.

In fact you may be surprised at what the facts show. We often think we are making an occasional exception to our diet when in reality, our exceptions are a regular part of our diet. Or we think we don’t eat “that much” but we take in an extra few hundred calories by nibbling between meals or while cleaning up after dinner.

When keeping a food journal, it’s important to write down everything you eat, even if it’s tasting food as you cook it.

Here are some basic guidelines to help you learn how to keep a diet journal:

  • Record these details:What you eat and drink
  • The amount of what you eat and drink
  • The time you eat
  • What you’re doing while eating (such as watching TV, working on the computer, etc.)
  • Your mood

If you are keeping a food journal to help identify food allergies, tracking symptoms will be part of your food journal as well. When counting calories or carbs you’ll want to make a column for that, too. You can create your own journal with a notebook by making columns for each category, or you can use free printable food journal sheets and keep them in a three ring binder.
